Purpose
Most brands manufacture meaning. Gondwana inherited it. The name carries three truths at once. It is Sanskrit, joining the Gond people and vana, forest, a name that refuses to separate a people from the land that formed them. It is the supercontinent the geologist Eduard Suess named in 1885, the single landmass that held Africa, South America, India, Australia and Antarctica as one body. And it is a living relic, because the fynbos on this reserve descends directly from the flora of that supercontinent.
The only safari brand on earth that can honestly say it is older than Africa.Kwena Lodge is named for the Khoikhoi, the original people of this coast, whose own name for themselves meant "the real people." Fifteen minutes away, the Pinnacle Point caves hold some of the earliest evidence of modern human intelligence, tool-making and pigment use from 165,000 years ago. People and land, inseparable, is the moral spine of this place.
Gondwana is family-owned, and run that way. Decisions are made for the long-term good of the land and the people on it, not for a quarterly return. That ownership shows up as a single discipline, applied in three directions.
Care for our people. Care for our guests. Care for the land. The same care, given three ways.A relict ecosystem is not a museum. The wildlife, the fynbos, the fire-cycles are all still in motion, 150 million years of refinement, still refining. To stay here is to walk inside an evolutionary process, and to help carry it forward.
To make the rarest landscape in Africa the most considered. And to leave it stronger than we found it.Our Code
The commitments that shape how we work, with each other and with everyone who stays.
Stillness is a skill.
Calm under pressure and unhurried with guests, we move at the pace of the land.
We belong to this place.
Grounded in the Cape, its people and its plants, we work from where we stand.
Done well, or not at all.
Care shows in the finish and the small things guests never have to ask for.
Say it plainly.
Honest with one another and with our guests. No spin, no hidden costs.
We rise together.
A family of people who look after each other as closely as the guests we host.
We do the hard, right thing.
Conservation, and real care, ask for brave choices. We make them.
The same, every day.
Reliable through every season, holding the line on what matters, year after year.
